Nervous system injuries
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, is a trauma to the brain that causes alteration in brain function, or other brain disruption such as altered consciousness or cognitive impairment. A TBI can be mild, causing bruising of the tissue and temporary impairment of brain function, or it can be severe and life threatening, causing destruction of brain tissue and permanent impairment of brain function. Stroke, also known as a brain attack or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is damage towards the brain cells. This is due to oxygen deprivation due to a clot formed on the site, a clot that travels from elsewhere, or a hemorrhage. Strokes are a very common type of Central Nervous System (CNS) disorder. In the United states strokes are the 3rd leading cause of death behind heart diseases and cancer. Strokes are the main cause of adult disability.
